A last ode to Summer - Look 3 (tan show off)

In my final week on holiday, I've decided to wear all those things that for months I won't be wearing again. Look 3 of "A last ode to summer" and it's time to show off some tan, my tangerine NW3 dress is perfect for just that.  Oh how I'll miss slipping on a short dress, jewelled flats and perfectly pedicured toes for a fun night out!

A last ode to Summer - Look 2 (cocktails on the beach)

Another day, another Ode to Summer look.  Today lunch at the beach, a little  beach-shop browsing and then the final defining moment of the day, aperitivo-time watching sunset at Ibiza's Blue Marlin.  Throughout the day I  wore my Chanel silk, navy maxi shirt dress with a skinny belt perfect as a chic beach cover-up and as a stylish sunset look (I love the 4 slits that make it float in the wind).

Nautical look NUMBER 6 - Bermuda shorts

A classic nautical look: beige bermuda shorts and navy t-shirt. My shorts were my mum's, a 1970's Gap style, but below I've found a very similar pair from Mango and a few ideas on how to wear them in the city with a denim shirts and twisted tan belt.

Nautical Look N4- The stripy dress

Tonight I'm off to dinner in the small harbour and I am wearing the first outfit in days- I'm keeping it nautical in a silk stripy dress from Oasis and flats on deck (strictly no shoes on board!).

Nautical look NUMBER 3 - Bandeau

Strapless, bandeau-style swimwear is by far the best style for tanning at sea. I can sit in the sun or snorkle all day and forget about nasty tan lines. I particularly love my new double-face bikini, it's navy one side and emerald green the other side, you can buy them in many beach towns in Italy but haven't found many elsewhere. I also love the two below. It doesn't come more nautical than underwater for todays pic (courtesy of my sister's new camera).

Nautical look NUMBER 2 - Head Scarf

I've always loved the old school glamour of a scarf tied around the head, but living in London I rarely get the chance to pull this look off! However, there are few moments in a fashionistas life where glamour meets practicality and a head scarf becomes a necessity: on a windy sail boat. Here are some of my favorite inspirations for today's look and a few of my favotite finds.

Nautical look NUMBER 1 - BB style

Well, not quite! But loved this photo of a teenage Brigitte Bardot sporting the breton top. And since I haven't done a stripy top in a while, I thought I would sport one today on the ferry on the way to the boat. After all, the context is perfect. Forgive me if in the next few days posts will come at odd times of day, but I am in the middle of the sea but will try my best to come up with 5 fabulous nautical looks.

Sailor style capsule wardrobe

I am off sailing with my friends for a few days- life is basic, space is limited and a small, practical suitcase a necessity. During the day I live in a bikini, t-shirt and sarong, in the evening a slip-on dress is the most practical (yet stylish) solution. Here is the content of my suitcase and a few of my favorite internet buys for life on deck.

1- Oasis dress for a "smart" night at the restaurant
2- Cos t-shirts for day and night and when the sun becomes too much
3- Asos maxi dress the easiest dress of all
4- YSL asymmetric top - a vintage number from my mother's trunk
5- bikinins- two or three at max
6- jeweled sandals for a stroll in one of the sea towns
7- Gap denim skirt
8- Sarong good for all: sunbathing, scarf, towel and sheet
9- Joseph belt because I never not pack at least one
10- Black vest that goes with anything
11- Miu Miu white skirt
12- Tops Shop head scarf for B.B look

Short Rules

Every year I say it's going to be my last, but as it turns out, every year I make a new set of "rules" to make shorts age appropriate. On the cusp of my 30th birthday, I've come up with my ultimate set of short-rules to live by, baring in mind that I am now talking about shorts, not bermudas, that are on the contrary a wardrobe classic, good at virtually any age. Shorts are anything above mid thigh, whereas hot pants are not even worth mentioning, as they are out of my vocabulary since 2000.

SEASON- I personally only dare a short mid summer, somehow the exposure feels more justifies.  I am comforted by a bit of thigh-tan and the slimming effects it has!
COVERAGE-shorts below covered above, too much flesh is just that: too much.
SHOES- the temptation to pair with a high heel is high, but flats are just so much more chic. I love chic. Jackie O wore them with Capri sandals.
MAKE- a well tailored short, with turn ups and concealed seams makes all the difference. When shopping for them I think Stella McCartney.

Hidden treasures...

I've just spent the morning raiding my mum's wardrobe, which is something I always do when I pass by Florence. She seems to have a never ending supply of amazing pieces, be it a pair of 60's GAP khaki bermuda's ("the first ones ever made", she would add), an anonymous 70's knee length suede skirt ( that happens to be so Chloe next season) or an 80's YSL jacket. When she pulled out these African print wide leg trousers I almsots screamed- Dries Van Noten SS10 collection is all about tribal prints and I absolutely love this trend. Furthermore, everything she hands over to me has an amazing story behind it and feels that extra bit special to say that it's hers.
